Continuation from Mt Vernon

This was what George Washington called a "necessary." A fancy out outhouse that had toilets, there were drawers underneath that were pulled out and dumped. The waste was then used in his gardens. Not only was he known as a President and a Commander, he thought of himself first as a farmer. He had beautiful gardens which are still in use today. Note the doors at the bottom-At least they didn't have to carry it very far. He saw the inadequacies in farming in the 18th century, and pioneered innovative methods such as the use of fertilizers, and crop rotation. There is a chair in his study which he had rigged a wooden paddle above his head and had a foot pedal-- voila a fan!!! Pretty smart guy....They won't let you take pictures inside the home to bad there was some really beautiful antiques. Well that's it up until Sat Happy Halloween- Ernie I loved your Halloween Card that was way to cool!!!!!! Love you guys bye for now Bob & Sharon.

Sat 10-30-10

We went to Annapolis yesterday. Today we are going into D.C. We just found out this weekend may not have been a good choice of going in, but it may turn out to be fun. Jon Stewart/Stephen Colbert are having a rally right in the heart of the Capitol. We are going on the bus, picks us up right here at RV Park, We leave this morning and hope it's a good day. Weather sure cooooooled down, got down to 30 this am and high is supposed to maybe get to 60, but sunny. I will get you some pictures to add on later so have a great Saturday. There is also a Marine Marathon starting over by Arlington Cemetery tomorrow sooo there's another traffic day....oh well! We think it will be fun???? Hope they caught the fool shooting up Marine Buildings did you hear about that????? And what would D.C. be without a few bomb threats what a city!!!!!! talk to you later. This is as far as we got to the National Monument!! We didn't go into D.C. today, we decided to go to Arlington Cemetery and Mt. Vernon instead, Good Choice!!! If you saw the news or know who Jon Stewart or Stephen Colbert are then you can see why. They had a huge crowd show up which really messed up any sightseeing for anyone... but good for them, love Jon Stewart but not the traffic, I guess they had a great time without us!!!! We went the other way and will do the same tomorrow. Arlington Cemetery was a very huge cemetery. We saw JFK burial site- Eternal Flame. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, The Changing of the guard. The Third U.S. Infantry maintains the vigil around the clock... the Sentinel paces 21 steps down the mat before the tomb, then he pauses 21 seconds and returns, this vigil goes on 24/7 never stops... That was something to see. Lots of people today and the weather was about 63, perfect in the sun but the wind is cold!!!! We decided to go to Mt. Vernon, what a beautiful place! You know where this is right?? I knew it was here and want to go to Monticello even more, (Jefferson's House) George Washington acquired Mt. Vernon in 1754. In the next 45 years he expanded his home to reflect his status as a "Virginia Gentleman," and he personally oversaw every detail of design, construction and decoration. The house, was as they say, "Meticulously Restored" based on a 1799 inventory that was taken at the time of Washington's death. There was only one room, that was off color and that was all it was was the color "BRIGHT GREEN" like lime, all the other rooms, furniture, old kitchen, What we would call appliances, wow.... all the way to what George called a "Necessary" ( a very fancy outhouse) A three seater, a real conversation room!! I am going to post these pictures separate just so you can see it(NO SHIT) ha ha ha... OK it's been a long day!!! I am not being dis-respectful I hope you don't think so. George Washington wrote, "No Estate in United America is more pleasantly situated than this..." And he was soooo right what a beautiful setting the Potomac River in his Backyard.... 8,000 acres. George & Martha are buried at Mt Vernon. We had another history lesson today. We headed back to the RV- no traffic. Tonight at the RV park they had "TRICK OR TREAT" If you want to hand out candy you display your pumpkins so kids know they are welcome. They had a tractor Hay Ride and they stopped WE HAVE LIGHTS & PUMPKINS!! THE KIDS WERE SO CUTE WISH I HAD THE CAMERA OUT, THEY WERE SO CUTE!!!!! We haven't had Trick Or Treat Kids in a looooong time!!!! ADORABLE!!!! Get rid of the Candy!!!Next stop tomorrow is ??? Not sure yet Hope you enjoy the pictures!!Videos of Unknown Soldier Change of Guard are at very bottom of pictures, posted twice ??? My Blog is confused!!!

Oct. 27, 2010 "LOVE & MISS YOU DAD"

The Big Apple has been an awesome trip! We have seen so much- I really don't know where to start. We couldn't have had better weather for all our sightseeing of NY. We took the train into the city Sat & Sun, best way to go. The ride was about 1 1/2 hr maybe alittle less, only one transfer thank god! We didn't get to lost, or get on the wrong train either!-- (ha ha ha)Sat was Times Square, Broadway area, Little Italy. We took the subway to Little Italy, great streets had a great lunch as I told you earlier, great sidewalk cafe and fantastic food! We walked alot and just checked out the area. Back on the subway this time it was very crowded!!! Train all good and still didn't get lost... Back to RV about 9:00PM.
Sun. we left around 9:00 for the train. Empire State Building lots of people, and lots of lines. We finally got to the top, and of course so did every other person in NY. View was hazy, but we could see everything. Temperature was about 72 beautiful day. Just walked around the city and enjoyed the area. We started making our way towards BROADWAY! We went into Gallagher's Steak House, which is right across the street from the Theater. Never to early for a cocktail is it. Great "Atmosphere" When you walked in the door there is a huge Refrigerator showing all there choice meats!! OK it's either Steak or Italian food tonight after the play. The bar was Very busy due to all the Matinees that are in awhile. They had these really great homemade potato chips, so we meet some people, have some drinks, and I AM SO EXCITED--- for JERSEY BOYS!!! The show was fantastic, everything that we expected and more! Great seats! No pictures you can't use your camera at all!!! We ended up going back to Gallaghers's for Dinner and met the other people we had met earlier. Great food! More cocktails good thing we are walking. WOW! Broadway at Night -- bright lights and Times Square amazing at night if you have never seen it try and do it. Lots of entertaining people, as you will see in one of the picture the dancing cowboy....One thing we found out is you DO NOT see alot of homeless people on the streets, at least in this area, if they find any they take them to a shelter, put them to work for the city doing clean up or some type of work for the city , they will find other people in the same situation and eventually they can get apartments together, and get back on their feet. Great Program. NY Sanitation definitely has JOB SECURITY. They had a HUGE Farmers Market right down on Broadway that afternoon, everything you could ever want.... and by the time we were making our way back towards Penn Station that night, you should have seen the city streets WHAT A MESS! But the street sweepers and garbage Crews were in their HIGH GEAR CLEAN UP MODE!!!! We got home after 11:00 PM and are getting up to go into the city again tomorrow, but this time we have a tour bus picking us up at 8:00 am not much sleep tonight. By the time I got to bed it was around 12:00 ALARM way to early. OK we're up and ready to go. The bus turned into a van, not great for seeing out of the windows unless you are next to one. But great day here as well. Our Driver was Al, just a Fountain of information about New York. Made a few stops, Then we get to Ground Zero. Very moving, when you think of what happened here. They are rebuilding the North Tower, which is now going to be called the Freedom Tower. It is going to be 386 feet taller than the North tower was. The South Tower is also under construction. They expect to have the towers completed in 2012. The picture of the Cross is an actual steel beam they pulled from the wreckage, this area was also dubbed "God's House" due to all the cross beams that were seen in this area.... But this was a special one, there is actually part of the plane wreckage wrapped around the cross. Wow- also note the baseballs that are placed on shelf. Very sad was to see Ladder 10 Firehouse all closed up, they lost their whole Department, they were the first on the scene, their House was right there! They have a Beautiful Bronze memorial on the wall of the house... Well very quiet here, all you can here is the construction, but people are silent... They were planting trees the day after we were there. We went to the Statue Of Liberty & Ellis Island. Tour trip was worth it due to just seeing the lines people who were waiting in line--- just for the boat to get over to the Statue. Got some good pictures. OK let me explain this one to you. The picture that has the grassy knoll where you can see the NY Skyline, you can see some bricks double sides, the one on the left represents the North Tower and the one on the right of course is the South Tower. Follow the lines and this shows you the actual spots where the towers were in the skyline. Wow it is such a different skyline with those buildings gone! The bricks/rocks are actual debris from the World Trade Center. The bricks are being removed this week and being replace by a steel wall that will stand forever to remember the victims of that Horrible day! It is very cool to see it in person and you can really see the image. The other picture of the skyline if you take an up close look you will see the new Freedom Tower, look for the cranes on top of the building. Also---- I hope to GOD that they don't allow a mosque to be built in the Trade Center Area. There is alot of controversy going on about this and it would be a HUGE SLAP in the face if they allow this!! They can put it somewhere else in the city but not here!!! WAKE UP GOVERNMENT WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU THINKING OF!!!!! I know I am probably forgetting some things but if I remember I will tell you. We went back to West Point on Monday- this time I had My drivers License....Beautiful place. Again weather was unusually warm for this time of year, around 74, not going to last rain is coming they say. Another history lesson, even though Bob is Navy he enjoyed it...The gal who was our guide lives on base. Her husband is a Lt Col. We saw Custer's Tomb, and other old graves, great churches, the grounds, all the cadets running about... also. The view of Point is beautiful. We even got to see the boys jump out of a Helicopter. Really beautiful grounds. So today is Wed, and we are leaving tomorrow for Washington, D.C. so let me get some pictures on here so I can go to bed!!! And I got the printer to work, every project is at least 2-3 hours!!!! Go Giants!!!! Bobby & Jen wow tickets for tomorrow!!!!Hope they do as good tomorrow as they are now!!!!
