Between the Maid of the Mist and The Cave of the Wind, we had a very wet day!!!. The Maid of the Mist started off nice and dry, but not for long. I tried to keep the camera on but there was no way. By the time we came back from under the Horseshoe falls we were SOAKED!!! What a fun ride! Then we went to The Cave of the Wind, which goes up a very long staircase under Bridal Falls, and is known as Hurricane Deck! No shit!!!! You can hardly see in front of you, the water is just pounding on you. I took a picture of Bob but I couldn't see in the camera if I had it. The force of this water is unbelievable. What a Great Day! And just fyi if some of the pictures look blurry they are a video most likely. thanks Marla not sure if people will know that. It was great to talk to you tonight Miss you!!!!!!! ok one more post I promise!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ft Niagara

This was where the enlisted men slept and the movies help capture it better???

HISTORY!!!!!

Sept. 29, 2010 Fort Niagara, NY

Three Hundred Years of History!!! This Fort was really a Great History lesson! I won't go into to much detail. Three nations have occupied Fort Niagara. The French of course who thought they would rule the new world. (well just for awhile) They actually built Fort Niagara. From the establishment of the permanent Fort at Niagara in 1726, until it was captured by the British in 1759. A white flag was flown above the walls. There are three flags that fly in the middle of the fort grounds. There is the American Flag, the British flag, and a white flag. I asked if it meant surrender, but it was actually a French Flag.
So now this is where it gets confusing. OK you ready-- The French loose the fort to the British,(1759). The British keep it for quite awhile. The war of 1812, they loose it for awhile but recapture it in 1813 by a surprise attack on Dec. 19, 1813. Like I said alot of history but really interesting..
There is also Fort George which is on the Canadian Side across the Niagara river, More history...More battles. May 25-26, 1813 The Americans attack Fort George burn it down to the ground. Once they were in control of Ft. George American leadership began to waver.... They didn't pursue the British Army and were then able to escape and re-group. By the time the Americans left Ft George their forces were too few and too late... They were attacked and defeated June 1813. Stuck in forts left for disease, boredom, and loss of their own beliefs.
So still at Fort George in Dec. 1813, Gen. George McClure decided that Ft George was untenable and ordered a withdrawal to the NY side of the river, Fort George was then ordered to be destroyed to prevent it's use by the British. Then he gives an unfortunate second order -- The adjacent town of Newark (or Niagara on the lake) was also to be burned. Private property was destroyed, and civilians were left without shelter. This unwarranted and destructive action would lead to a British retaliation, and result, by wars end, in the nearly complete devastation of both sides of the Niagara River. The fort was eventually given back to the Americans in 1815. Treaty settled! Men!!!!
That's it for that era then there's the Civil war but were not going there! If you are ever here come see this amazing Part of history!!
I know this is too much information but it is so cool to walk through these buildings and try and imagine what it was like. Huge Cannons, the buildings, surroundings. This place is HUGE!! Right on Lake Ontario. I had my picture taken with the minute man who gave a musket demo. pretty neat but the gun powder was pretty smelly.
In the museum there is "the original flag" that flew over Fort Niagara in 1813, when it was captured back by the British they took the flag as a souvenir for the king, but he didn't want it, so he puts it in some trophy room where it just sits until......1994. The flag resurfaced, a descendant, of the old king, sold it back to the museum for $150,000.00 they said she needed a new roof on her castle in Scotland... It's on display at Fort Niagara. It has 15 stars on it not 13. I will post a picture of it. The dark spots were caused by when it was stored at the castle, and there was a fire in the castle and voila dark spots.
Although many different versions of the Stars and Stripes have flown over the walls of Fort Niagara, the 15 Stars and Stripes banner displayed today, was in use from 1794-1818. A flag of this design, flying over Fort McHenry during a British Bombardment in 1814, inspired Francis Scott Key to compose the lyrics to what would become the Star Spangled Banner!!!! OK enough my brain is tired!!!!! We had a Great day today. Tomorrow we are going on the American side of Niagara Falls. And what day would not be complete without us getting LOST!!! Just alittle and at least the neighborhood was good!!!! So enjoy the pictures and I hope you liked your History lesson. I hope I got it right!!!!! xxxxxoooooooo

Ok Night Time Niagara WOW!!!

The lights were so cool because they keep changing the colors!!!

Niagara Falls WOW day & night & WET!!!!

Well today was a pretty spectacular day!!! It was all we expected and more! A little sunshine would have made it a perfect day, but hey WE HAD TO GET WET ANYWAY!!!! Great rain slickers very stylish! This video is where it shows you we were WET!!! Today we were on the Canadian side of the Falls. Just can't describe it. We had a great tour guide, his name was Erik. He was born and raised in Niagara and is a high school teacher at the high school here also. He was very informative.... Well night rolls around and we get to watch the lighting of the falls. Night pictures of the Horseshoe Falls were quite blurry but the Bridal Veil falls came out pretty good. It is pretty amazing to be so close to the USA then you are over in Canada. It was neat to see the hydro-electric power plants for each country, and they are just across the river from each other!!! Pretty impressive!! We saw the Gorge- Whirlpool area WOW category 6 rapids yeah let's go rafting- no way!!! People have tried and really are not encouraged, in fact they have a BIG YELLOW CIRCLE painted on a rock where the rapids are really a "6" and they have Helicopters land due to "Stupid people" who wade out to far DUH! or get on a raft HELLO!!!! Oh well Idiots are everywhere But what a beautiful area. I know I am probably not putting something in here, but I will remember!!! But tomorrow is another day and it's not supposed to rain!!!

Our sight seeing today, Lake Erie- from Geneva on the Lake, Geneva State Park & Marina, Ferrante's Winery.
What a Beautiful Lake! And it is HUGE! We went down to the beach and it was so nice. Sandy beach, Had some waves- great sounds, Water was cool but felt really good.
"Shelagh" ---- Found you some driftwood and flat rocks for your baskets!!! This was at a City park in Geneva. Then we took a ride out to Geneva State Park. Great place, nice marina and a public beach. Hardly anyone there today. It was really WINDY today. Had some showers but looked worse than it was. Very Warm and a little humidity. We went to the Elks lodge in Ashtabula ( can you say that?) Nice Lodge right on Lake Erie beautiful view, Prime Location!! Didn't get any pictures, maybe we can go back??? We went back to Ferrante Winery for dinner tonight!"EXCELLENT" They had a band at Gazebo so we went outside for awhile.
Interesting the winery borders a farm and it's ALL CORN!! makes for a good picture!!! The winery has 64 acres. It was founded in 1937, they had a fire in 1997 and rebuilt this really beautiful Winery. And the wine is really good too!!! Tomorrow is the Grape Jamboree here in Geneva, it's a big thing!! 47th Annual Festival looking forward to a good time!!! So until tomorrow "chow" just kidding "CIAO BABY" If it's spelled wrong it's Bob's Fault!!!!xxxxxxoooooooo

Wed. Sept. 22, 2010

I think today is the last day of Summer, and we had a big down pour today at Lake Erie. We headed out to go see some sights anyway and hope not to get to wet. The weather did cooperate. We went into Geneva today. The town is really neat. Definitely a summer place to visit. Some of the establishments have closed for the season but there are still a few left. We went to the Old Firehouse Winery & Restaurant (wine not very good) but they had a cool little fire truck, some neat decorations, signs. In town really cool drug store with an old soda fountain Part of the old pharmacy, with some really old bottles, old desk and adding machine pretty neat memorabilia. Drove out of town a little and found the Harpersfield Covered Bridge, Historical Landmark. First built in 1868, a flood in 1913 washed part of the bridge away and the steel truss was added. Thought we would try another winery??? FINALLY!!! Ferrante Winery now that's more like it! There is also a restaurant, really beautiful winery and the wine was good!! we are going to go back for dinner maybe tomorrow or Fri. Pretty fun day! Poor Marla has to go back to work tomorrow, See you on Sat. Have fun with your new house guest!!! HA HA HA ANOTHER DOG! But just for a week right?? Well not sure what we are doing tomorrow hopefully no rain...
